At a previous job, we faced not only hardware issues but also security threats such as DDoS attacks. Implementing redundancy through server duplication and geographic distribution helped mitigate these threats. We also used security measures like firewalls and intrusion detection systems at each location to prevent unauthorized access and ensure that even if one location was compromised, others remained secure.

While redundancy is definitely important, it is also important that systems should be having Active-Active configuration and thorough resilience and chaos validation cycles . The intelligence many times which is being theorized fails to land on the ground as resilience fails to get required priority over tight timelines. For instance i have seen many cloud solutions fail to scale owing to several factors be it poor proxy configs, wrong replica set count, poor network load balancing or database level connection bottlenecks.The engineering mindset along with micro/ macro view of failure resistance should be kept in mind . If we are saying that our system is resilient under failure. Look It from the end user perspective .it should be seamless

This is a good view that we are focusing on data consistency. Ideally data when travel under failures is prone to loss. However idempotent system assures that data would have consistency and could retain its integrity even in the failure scenarios. Kafka based system with idempotent behaviour could give much needed resilience and consistency for streaming applications. Thus could be ideal bet to have more data consistent systems. Similar approaches also exists at network and database level to ensure . Data loss is minimum and could be compensated during failure scenarios.

The choice between eventual and strong consistency often boils down to the data accuracy versus the system availability and performance. If your application can tolerate short periods of inconsistency and you prioritize scalability and availability, eventual consistency might be the right choice. However, if your system requires immediate and accurate data across all nodes - such as in financial services or real-time collaborative applications - strong consistency is the more appropriate model, despite the potential performance trade-offs.

In my view, mastering load balancing is crucial for high-performance architectures: • Maximizes resource utilization across your infrastructure • Ensures high availability and fault tolerance • Improves user experience with faster response times • Enables seamless scaling during traffic spikes • Provides insights into system behavior and bottlenecks

Effective load balancing plays a crucial role in security strategy. I have implemented security features like SSL termination at the load balancer level to encrypt data traffic and prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. Additionally, load balancers can be configured to distribute traffic based on security policies, such as blocking requests from known malicious IP addresses, enhancing both performance and security.

The choice of transaction management protocol should align with your system’s requirements in terms of consistency, availability, and performance. While 2PC is a robust choice for ensuring atomicity, its performance trade-offs and blocking nature may not suit all software systems. For systems where availability and responsiveness are critical, exploring alternative approaches like the Saga pattern or consensus algorithms may be a better choice.

Monitoring tools like Appynamics , dynatrace , kibana, grafana ,etc have good failure detection alerting capabilities. However a larger challenge lies in automation of the mitigation response of these alerts.The remedial actions still requires manual intervention or poor automation strategy that is hardly tested in production environment and fail most of times. I believe still very less customers are bold enough to have willingness to create and test in production .The AI system should be incorporated with human overseer to define , simulate and mitigate possible scenarios.

By promptly detecting failures and initiating failover processes, distributed systems can minimize downtime, maintain a seamless user experience, and uphold the high availability standards.

Robust data recovery strategies should include regular encrypted backups and point-in-time recovery capabilities to restore data to its state before a failure. Techniques like encrypted log shipping and database replication provide real-time data protection, enabling recovery from incidents like ransomware attacks with minimal data loss and no compromise of sensitive information.
