I personally feel that testing out which tool works for you and your workflow is the ultimate way to decide. - Choose 3 popular ones. - Install and make them a part of your daily process. - Give each of them a week. It often comes down to which one feels more comfortable to use. And there's no wrong in choosing a simple tool over popular ones. For example, if you're starting out with shell scripts or simple python code then you might just use Sublime or Notepad++.
