What are the most common software quality issues and how can you address them?

Functional defects can be a real headache in software development. They often sneak in during the coding process and can disrupt the whole system. To tackle these issues, I've found that thorough testing is key. Start with unit testing to catch small glitches early on, then move to integration testing to ensure different parts of your software work together smoothly. System testing helps you see how the entire system functions, while acceptance testing confirms it meets user requirements. Metrics like defect density, severity, resolution time, and removal efficiency provide valuable insights into the health of your software. They help you track progress and identify areas that need improvement.

Within a growing pace of software developmet and larger risk apettite, most of the teams are now using automated checks for quick regression catching, while spending the rest of the energy on creative exploration and the usual ticket testing.

Non-functional part of application behaviour is always challenging: it differs depending on the context (target group, size of the app, current priorities, etc.). One of the most important parts is to make sure we are a) speaking about non-func requirements with the entire team and the client/end-user b) updating/reviewing them regularly. What many projects also struggle with, is that once these items are discussed, we are not resilient enough in pushing for resulting actions/mitigations execution.

Una de las aristas que considero muy importante es la definición de los requerimientos no funcionales, ya que hoy una de las principales dificultades, es que los equipos de proyectos no logran interpretar correctamente cuales de los requerimientos requiere de mayor prioridad de acuerdo a los intereses que sugiere el modelo de negocio. Además los modelos de desarrollo a través del prototipo funcional, no contribuyen a centrar los esfuerzos en atributos de la calidad. Por eso en estos tiempos, es muy importante incorporar mejores métodos para decidir que atributos definen la calidad y que medida deben tener para lograr satisfacer las expectativas de un cliente.

We can assume that every developer knows the value and want to write high quality code, then why it is not happening? - Does the team have the right skills? - Do they have enough time? - Do they receive feedback about their work? - Do they have the morale? - Do they have the right quality gates? - Do they receive the help they need? - Do their responsibilities and ownership properly defined?

Modern QA is a lot about consulting: introduction of QA processes in the team, quality management, best practices, evangelisation, defining weaknesses in projects & suggesting improvements. I think we're moving forward with the "Quality coaching" idea, mirroring "Agile coaching" from the past. It means focusing on growing team maturity around quality, helping moving towards "quality built-in" state all-around and making sure everyone is well aware of "whole team approach", where each team member contributes to quality goals.

Process issues are the roadblocks in the software development journey. They can lead to delays or even derail the project. Adopting agile methodologies like Scrum or Kanban ensures a smooth journey. Metrics like cycle time act as the GPS, ensuring timely and efficient software delivery.

Poor requirements, unrealistic schedules, lack of collaboration, misaligned priorities, insufficient investment, and lack of transparency often lead to software quality issues. To address them, organizations should foster a culture that values quality, integrate feedback / testing earlier, modernize feedback / testing practices, balance competing demands, implement governance for transparency and accountability, and recognize quality is everyone’s responsibility across product teams and the wider organisation

Maintainability issues Maintainability issues are real problems during later phases of software development especially in product development. There are multiple reasons for it, and not only limited to:- 1. Requirements were vague during development phase. 2. Software architecture is not really thought of; considering code evolution over time. 3. Proper software quality process was not in place. 4. Hurrying to get a lot of feature implementations integrated, not giving much focus on code reviews & unit testing. 5. Lack of proper testing practices. 6. Dependent teams working in entire silos. 7. Sphagetti coding. One thing to always note while writing software is - the code we write live for years, probably even outlives us, humans.

One thing I would like to add is the connectivity with Interfaces where the input received and output generated are from various Db components and there is a challenge in pointing to the required schema dynamically during Test execution.
