Think of a CASB (Cloud Access Security Broker) as a security guard for your company's cloud data. It sits between your employees and the cloud services they use (like email, file storage, etc.). What does a CASB do? Keeps watch: It monitors how people use your cloud services and what data goes in and out. Enforces rules: Assure your company's security rules are always followed. Protects and helps stop things like: Employees using unauthorized cloud apps ("shadow IT") Sensitive data accidentally leaking Someone sharing files they shouldn't Malware (viruses) getting into your cloud systems. Why is it important? Using a lot of different cloud services can create security problems. CASB helps plug those holes and keep your cloud data safe.

Microsoft's CASB solution known as Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps offers the ability to reverse proxy applications for granular session control. An example of this is being able to block copy, download, print etc. from SharePoint or Office 365. Without this reverse proxy, such level of session control wouldn't be possible. It's worth mentioning this configuration isn't achievable with the CASB alone, it requires a conditional access policy to be set up in Entra ID.

If you have an E5 license in your organization then Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps is included at no cost. There will be some effort required to ensure access for the security teams is present, the relevant data is being captured and alerts may need tuning but once these are overcome, the CASB continues to protect against shadow IT and other anomalous behaviours in your M365 tenant.

Consider factors such as the number of cloud services in use, data sensitivity, and compliance requirements. Look for features like granular access control, data loss prevention, integration with other security tools, and real-time monitoring. It’s essential to select a CASB that can provide scalability and flexibility, especially as your organization’s cloud usage grows.
