How do you find patterns in data?

Having specific goals in mind is always a good start. However, data quality concerns, data collection issues, or patterns which violate your model assumptions may mean that your data *can't* answer your questions. You might need different data, or you might have more luck asking a different question. Be open to the possibilities... and honest about the limitations.

Try and get the most granular level data in order to define the problem clearly as it will help finding the pattern at the different level and also give the relations that it has with different other variables

Market knowledge is crucial in this process, you need to have a good understanding of the market you are analyzing and how the different data connect and correlate. When working with new data, it's often helpful to ask yourself "what are the questions I'm trying to answer?". These questions might come from a stakeholder or from yourself but either way they will provide direction as you begin to explore the data. As you begin to explore, with these questions in mind, you may discover you don't have all the data you need (is there another source which can be joined in?) or that the fields are there but the data is sparse/contains many nulls (is there a process issue in how the data is captured? Can this be improved, for example, with data validation in source systems?). Be sure you have the correct meanings and definitions for the fields you are analysing. Do they really mean what you think they mean?

We also adjust the data to a common scale and transform it into a usable format. The next step is exploratory data analysis (EDA), where we calculate descriptive statistics such as means, medians, and standard deviations, and use visualizations like histograms and scatter plots to identify visual patterns. Finally, we select and transform the most relevant variables for analysis, ensuring that the data is ready for the application of analytical techniques or machine learning models that will help identify more complex patterns.

Patterns may not be evident when looking at data across a shorter time horizon (days, or weeks). You may need to explore longer horizons like months or years in order to find patterns you didn’t know existed. Longer time horizons can increase the probability of “dirty data”, it’s essential to normalize the data as much as possible while retaining as many characteristics of the original data as possible.

In my oppinion the first thing you need to do is to clean the data. Very often you get "unboiled" data from your sources and some of this data might contain errors and missing values (just to name a few). It would be headless to jump into analysis without the cleaning process first.

Before you can do any of this, you will need to develop an understanding of the data. Ask key questions about the source and nature of it: - Where does the data come from? Who are the experts who can answer questions? - How often is it updated? - What is the granularity? - What does each column or field represent? Is there a data dictionary? - What is the time frame of the data? - How large is it? What tools can be used to analyze it given the size? - Where else is this data used? Some of this can be answered by exploring the data, but statistics and visualization alone won't be able to many of these questions.

When I explore data, I like to try and tell myself what I'm seeing, using words. Doing that helps me clarify my thoughts and identify logical gaps. One thing to keep in mind is that even the cleanest data set could be missing ~context~. So part of the exploration phase should always be checking your analysis logic and considering whether you need to source additional data to provide the appropriate level of context.

Imagine we have a company that has its staff age in a column called worker_age – and most peoples are around 30 but someone's 90, that's an outlier! Identifying and understanding the domain knowledge is one of the first steps to finding patterns. If you understand how different sources are related and how they can be morphed to find insights, it could help to identify patterns much quicker.

A wonderful way to start understanding your data is to first do a quick analysis of the data. Yes, you can use SQL, but there are other tools that you can utilize. Many DataViz tools have a "Data Preparation" module which usually has a built-in data analysis feature which will allow you to see a quick distribution of each value in the dataset. These tools can also update any anomalies so that your data is as clean as possible. At this point, one could start using SQL, or even a DataViz tool to dig further into the data and spot other trends and patterns. Before you start exploring your data, you must ensure that it is as clean as possible, in my opinion.

Visualization tools enable me to transform complex datasets into easily understandable charts, graphs, and dashboards, allowing for a more intuitive exploration of information. When choosing visualization you also need to remember to make sure that people with reading difficulties such as colorblinds (as example), also needs to be able to read the chart. Red/Green is often used and should be replaced with other colours.

You’ll need to consider whether it’s temporal, categorical, or spatial. Then standard design principles of colour, proper use of marks and legends, and keep it clean. I follow a 10 second rule, meaning in 10 seconds your audience must know immediately the story of your data. I try my best to avoid scrolling, I hate visuals where I need to scroll. Interactivity is also critical in my view. Your audience must be able to explore their data without you. Consider the affordance your visual analysis will provide. I remember implementing a Self-Organising Map before reprocessed its output in Tableau as I find Tableau interactivity as best-in-class, I love their parameter capability.

Ditch the standard bar and pie charts. You're on the hunt for patterns, correlations, and hidden gems, you need a custom approach. PowerBI or Tableau won't help, explore tools like Matplotlib and layer multiple dimensions in various forms. Experiment to tame overwhelming data. Dealing with a year's worth of data? Try zooming in on a random day. Physical quantities are involved? Consider using a logarithmic scale to reveal hidden patterns. Leverage color, shape, and size as additional dimensions to pack even more information. There's no one-size-fits-all approach, find techniques that work for you and your specific data. So, get out there, experiment, forget about rules and have fun uncovering hidden knowledge within your data!

The visualisation part is as important as the analysis of the data. It is important to choose a visualisation that tells a story with the data. One that can be easily interpreted by the user, even for those who do not know the origin of the analysed data. This also involves selecting a colour palette that matches the visualisation.

Once you've delved into your data, the next step is to pick the perfect way to show it visually and uncover the hidden patterns. Visualizations like bar charts, line charts, and maps all have their pros and cons. To decide, think about the kind of data you have, how many things you're comparing, how detailed you want to get, and who will be looking at your creation(audience). Also, remember to use the right colors, sizes, labels, and keys to make your visuals stand out and grab attention.

Selecting the right data visualisation is essential for effectively conveying information, revealing insights, and enabling better decision-making. It requires an understanding of both the data and the audience, as well as knowledge about various types of visualisations and their strengths.

Moreover, the essence of effective visualization lies not just in depicting data, but in sculpting a narrative that can resonate with the viewer. In our age of information overload, a thoughtfully crafted graph or chart can serve as an oasis of clarity, bridging the gap between raw data and meaningful insights.

Analyzing your data doesn’t exclusively happen after you have created visualizations, though. Visualization is one way to present findings in data—the data itself should be interpreted and analyzed first to find the right way of presenting it. Not all data analysis needs visualizations, either. With the rise of self-service refreshing reports (e.g., Power BI reports) many business users will find themselves largely analyzing reports of vizualizations already prepared by someone else—but for the full effect, knowing how to analyze the data and present it oneself is tremendously powerful.

You can even use captions to guide people through the story of your picture. It's like telling a story – beginning, middle, and end – so that everyone understands why the data is important.

Analysing visualisation can be done by 1.Choosing the Right Visuals: Start by selecting visuals that best represent your data story. Whether it's charts, graphs, or maps, the right choice enhances clarity. 2.Color with Purpose: Use colors intentionally to convey meaning. A well-thought color scheme can emphasize trends and draw attention where needed. 3.Simplify and Declutter: Less is more. Simplify your visuals to convey the main message effectively. Remove unnecessary elements for a clean and focused display. 4.(Most important)Tell a Clear Story: Your visuals should narrate a story. Ensure a logical flow, guiding your audience through insights and conclusions without confusion.

The most critical thing here is generating actual insight - what do the patterns or trends tell us, and importantly what are we going to do about it? The best insights uncover things we hadn't spotted or correlated before, perhaps from different data sets that when matched show us a new way of thinking. Recommendations from those insights are key - this fuels learning, otherwise it's just observation.

If in case the dataset is very large and complex in nature then it is recommended to use Machine learning algorithm to automatically find the patterns in the data. ML algorithm can be a very powerful tool to find patterns which normally we can’t detect using manual techniques.

Sometimes, creating a new metric provides a unique, exciting insight that wasn't clear before in your data visualization. The newly calculated metric may show a new pattern in the data and give a different data story by enabling a view of the results from a different perspective, which will help make better decisions.

Always patterns are going to lead same decisions, changing the patterns allows new possibilities in fulfilling the gaps and allowing the add-ons, such as nothing need to in limited way of thinking, UI/UX/VFX anything related to design will allow the capacity of thinking or refining the patterns.

As you venture into refining your visuals, bear in mind that stakeholders are more interested in how your visualization will add value to the organization. Hence, having a second eye look at your visualization, get feedback, then compare and making necessary modifications. Visualizations should be appealing and at the same time insightful without the need to spend too much time trying to understand it.

Patterns in data is more than just descriptive analysis. Yes, sure there is a lot of value and impact of having the right data at hand when an important decision needs to be made. Equally so, having visualization confirm a hunch or break down a bias, is a transformative power for an organization. But the true value comes from creating an actual change, based on data. It can be easy to learn something new, or to be reaffirmed by data–event wrongly. But if we have systems and processes in place for how we use data and not just look at it that where transformation happens. That's where patterns in data becomes more than just patterns—they become actionable insights.

Finding patterns in data is great and using machine learnings can enable you to find insights that are below the surface and quite quickly. However, in many problems patterns simply show what is normal. Sometimes the solution to the problem or what is most interesting is not the pattern, it’s the anti-pattern.

For qualitative analysis, tagging is super useful as are multi-dimensional or 2x2 graphs. Of course, affinity mapping in Figjam/Miro is the de facto standard approach. When it comes to semi/unstructured data, advanced visualization techniques could be used (explainable AI & factor analysis share similarities in uncovering patterns, but explainable AI goes beyond by providing human-friendly explanations for complex machine decisions, important for decision trustworthiness & understanding)
