How do you address the scalability and reliability issues of wireless network multihop and mesh networks?

1 Network topology

The network topology, or the way the nodes are connected and arranged, affects the performance and efficiency of wireless network multihop and mesh networks. A common topology is the tree topology, where nodes form a hierarchical structure with a root node that connects to the internet or another network, and branch nodes that relay data to and from the root node. However, this topology can create bottlenecks, congestion, and single points of failure at the root node or the branches. A better alternative is the mesh topology, where nodes can communicate with multiple neighbors and dynamically route data along the best path. This topology can improve scalability, reliability, and load balancing, as nodes can join, leave, or fail without disrupting the network.

2 Routing protocols

Routing protocols are the rules and algorithms that determine how data packets are forwarded from one node to another in wireless network multihop and mesh networks. They need to cope with the dynamic and unpredictable nature of wireless links, such as interference, fading, and mobility. Proactive routing protocols, such as Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), maintain up-to-date routing tables for all nodes in the network, but consume more bandwidth and energy. 3 Quality of service

Quality of service (QoS) is a measure of how well a network can deliver data with certain requirements, such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, and packet loss. Wireless network multihop and mesh networks need to provide QoS for various types of applications and users, including voice, video, data, and emergency services. However, due to limited and variable resources, interference and contention among nodes, and dynamic and heterogeneous traffic, achieving QoS in wireless network multihop and mesh networks is difficult. To improve QoS, some techniques can be used such as cross-layer design which integrates different layers of the network stack to optimize performance; admission control which decides whether to accept or reject a new data flow; resource allocation which assigns resources like bandwidth, power, and channels based on their QoS requirements; and scheduling which determines the order and timing of data transmission based on the QoS requirements.

4 Security and privacy

Security and privacy are essential for wireless network multihop and mesh networks due to the sensitive and confidential data and services they involve. However, these networks are vulnerable to attacks and eavesdropping due to the open and shared nature of wireless medium, as well as the lack of central authority and trust. Solutions for enhancing security and privacy include cryptography, key management, intrusion detection and prevention, and anonymity and obfuscation. Cryptography is the use of mathematical techniques to encrypt and decrypt data, authenticate identities, and sign messages. Key management is the process of generating, distributing, storing, updating, and revoking cryptographic keys among nodes in a secure way. Intrusion detection and prevention is the process of monitoring activities, detecting malicious or anomalous behaviors, and responding to attacks. Anonymity and obfuscation are methods of hiding or disguising node identity or content in the network.
